Day 9: Chiu Gompa is at a fabulous location atop a hill overlooking the Lake Manasorovar. Lake Manasorovar (4588 m) is located in West
Tibet between Mt. Kailash (6714 m) & the Gurla Mandhata range (7694 m). It covers a distance of 90 kms & takes 4-5 days for a full circuit of the lake. The best time to circle Manasorovar is in late autumn & early spring when the streams
and rivers flowing into the lake are low.
Day 10: CHIU MONASTERY TO LANGPONA
The trail follows the Ganga Chu & remains on the headlands for 5 kms & is quite level. Mt. Kailash is a constant companion during this
stretch. The cliff along the trail are dotted with caves dug out by Hindus & Buddhist hermits over the centuries. The trail then descends to Cherkip Valley where you will see Cherkip Monastery, one of the smallest of the 8 lakeside monasteries. We continue further to the main pilgrim path at Langpona Monastery. The site here is surrounded by pastures where nomads from Horchu & Purang graze their animals in winter.
Day 11: LANGPONA-SERALUNG
The trail fromn Langpona to the east side of Manasorovar is clear, flat & easy. A trail along the shore fords the Samo Tsangpo shortly after
rounding the lake's northeastern corner. And 7 kms south of the Samo Tsangpo is Seralung Monastery, well hidden at the mouth of a side valley.
Day 12: SERALUNG-TRUGO
Following the trail south of Seralung, the hills bordering the lake recede & a plain develops southeast of the lake. We ford a stream & cross
a bridge festooned with prayer flags over the Tag Tsangpo. We go past the ruins of Ningo Monastery which has been visited by Atisha. 4 kms further from this monastery is Trugo, an active monastery. Seralung to Trugo takes about 7 hours. Most Tibetan pilgrims walk from Horchu to Trugo in one long day.
