The

a

of
small
interesting
Buddhist
villages,
past

and
Sherpa
houses.
This
historic
trail
was
once
the
old
trade
route
between
Nepal
and
Tibet.
The
Dugunagadi
Fortress
is
a
maze
of
crumbling
walls
strategically
situated
on
a
plateau.
The
views
are
stunning;
during
the
day
one
gazes
at
Tibetan
snowcapped
peaks
and
by
night,
the
lights
of
Khasa,
the
first
Tibetan
town
north
of
the
Friendship
Bridge,
glisten
throughout
the
dark
evening
sky.
We
will
spend
our
first
night
under
the
stars
here.
DAY
3:
GYASOSAKH
-
2900
m
(4
to
5
hours)
From
the
fortress,
we
follow
the
path
through
the
gate.
The
gateway
is
adorned
with
religious
paintings
and
a
colorful
mandala
on
the
roof.
The
trail
ascends
to
the
'way
of
the
dead',
a
route
used
to
carry
bodies
to
the
religious
funeral
ceremony.
The
path
slowly
begins
to
change
into
dense,
lush
forest.
Along
the
route
you
will
pass
Tasitham,
a
quaint
village
adorned
with
fluttering
prayer
flags.
The
campsite
is
located
on
a
ridge,
overlooking
the
"white
lakes";
rows
of
mountains,
each
divided
by
waves
of
clouds,
creates
a
series
of
beautiful
white
lakes.
DAY
4:
PHUNBOCHE
DADA-
3800
m
(5
hours)
The
path
slowly
begins
to
change
into
dense
lush

cloaked
with
old
twisted
tree-trunks
that
are
draped
in
moss
and
surrounded
by
numerous
species
of
ferns
and
other
assorted
flora.
In
the
spring,
rhododendrons
are
in
full
bloom
and
dots
of
red
and
white
come
alive
across
the
countryside.
Upon
reaching
your
campsite,
the
views
of
the
Tibetan
Himalayan
range
are
breathtaking.

DAY
5:
BHAIRAV
KUND
LAKE
-
4300
M
(2.5
hours)
It
is
a
short
hike
through
a
rhododendron
forest,
then
the
trail
gradually
climbs
past
the
tree
line
and
contours
around
the
sides
of
the
mountains
up
to
Bhairav
Kund,
one
of
the
most
sacred
pilgrimage
sites
for
Shamans.
Every
August
during
the
full
moon
devotees
make
their
way
to
this
high
elevation
holy
mountain
lake
to
worship
and
bathe.
From
the
pass
the
views
of
the
Himalayas
are
up-close
and
spectacular;
at
6966
m
Dorje
Lakpa
resembles
an
inverted
shark
tooth
looming
in
the
distance.
We
pitch
camp
beside
the
lake
and
a
nearby
gompa,
a
Buddhist
temple.
DAY
6:
CHAGAM
-
2200
m
(5
hours)
In
the
morning,
take
a
half-hour
walk
up
the
hill,
just
above
the
lake
for
amazing
views
of
the
Langtang
range
to
the
west,
and
to
the
east,
the
Tibetan
Himalayan
range.
The
walk
above
the
tree
line
takes
us
to
a
rocky
alpine
environment.
For
about
an
hour
you
will
pass
numerous
mani
walls
which
are
stone
partitions
that
are
carved
with
Tibetan
Buddhist
prayers.
This
area
exudes
an
unspoken
peace
and
calmness.
As
the
path
begins
to
drop,
the
forests
come
alive
with
exotic
flora
and
fauna
indigenous
to
the
Himalayan
region.
After
a
few
hours
walking
in
this
untouched
area
there
is
a
steep
descent
down
the
ridge
towards
the
village
of
Chagam.
One
of
the
highlights
of
the
trek
is
an
all
women's
monastery.
In
the
morning
we
will
visit
a
renowned
nunnery
housing
300
nuns.
Some
travel
as
far
away
as
Lhadakh
in
order
to
spend
time,
learn
and
meditate
here.
The
layout
of
the
village
is
unusual
in
that
each
nun
has
her
own
house,
thus
creating
a
colorful
spattering
of
red,
yellow,
green
and
white
homes
throughout
the
beautiful
countryside.
Much
of
the
day's
walk
is
along
carefully
sculpted
steep
terraces
with
wide-open
views
of
the
valley.
DAY
7:
THE
BORDERLANDS
-
1000
m
(5
hours)
After
Listi
you
begin
the
long
steep
descent
back
to
The
Borderlands.
Along
the
route
you
will
pass
houses
that
cling
to
the
sides
of
the
mountains
and
terraces
with
sheer
drops.
As
you
make
your
final
approach
towards
the
Bhote
Kosi
there
are
outstanding
views
of
the
valley.
Upon
reaching
the
river,
we
will
cross
a
small
bridge
over
the
Kaule
Khola,
our
premiere
adventure
canyon.
You
will
return
to
Borderlands
Riverside
Resort
in
the
afternoon,
a
perfect
time
to
unwind,
have
a
drink
and
relax
in
a
hammock
after
your
long
trek.
DAY
8:
RETURN
TO
KATHMANDU

a
lunch
at
