Bike Bhutan

Description

Bike-Bhutan route traverses Bhutan from west to east. As you ride, you will accumulate a total of approximately 53,000 feet of ascent and 60,000 feet of descent, crossing five of Major Mountain passes along the way. The maximum altitude along the route is 12,465 feet. More than anything you will enjoy those climbs and descents while traveling through some of the most beautiful and unspoiled scenery in this world.

Itinerary

DAY 1 BANGKOK-PARO
The flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all the mountain flights. After lunch visit the National Museum. In the evening, you will assemble your bikes in preparation for the start of your journey. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
DAY 2 PARO-THIMPHU
Today's ride will cover 37 miles, is a gentle ride that help you get in the rhythm of things. The road to Thimphu, capital of Bhutan follows the valley of the Thim-chu (river) through a mixture of rice fields and conifer forests. Evening at leisure. Dinner & overnight at hotel.
DAY 3 THIMPHU-WANGDUEPHODRANG (WANGDI)
After breakfast you will tackle the 14-mile climb to Dochula Pass (3,100m). The views from the pass are magnificent, offering a panorama of the eastern Himalayas. Hot lunch will be served at the Pass. The descent from the pass to Wangdi is 26 miles through the leafy temperate forests and semi-tropical zone with abundant orange trees, bananas and bamboos. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
DAY 4 WANGDUEPHODRANG(WANGDI)-GANGTEY GOENPA
The road is flat for the first 6 miles. Just beyond the Tikke Zam (a bridge across the river), begins the long ascent to the summits of the Black Mountains. Todayís one is the first big climb of the trip gaining about 4,800 feet of altitude over the next 25 miles. Lunch box will be served on route. Dinner and overnight at lodge.
DAY 5 GANGTEY GOENPA-TRONGSA
Load bikes into the support vehicles for the short (1,000 feet of ascent) climb back to the pass, for the superb ìoff-roadî descend back down to the main road. Then you continue your climb for 9 miles to Pele La Pass (10,560 feet) ñ the traditional boundary between the Western and Central Bhutan. On clear days you can enjoy the view of the Mt. Jhomolhari (23,997 feet) rising in western Bhutan. It is downhill almost all the way to Trongsa. Lunch will be served at Chendebji Choeten. Evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Lodge.
DAY 6 TRONGSA-BUMTHANG (JAKAR)
In approximately about 18 miles after Trongsa, you will reach the Yotong La (10,880 feet). Then descend to Chumey village at about 8,480 feet. Tea stop at Chumey and admire the Woolen hand woven textiles ñ the specialty of Bumthang valley. After a short gradual climb to Kiki La, a great descent into Bumthang Valley. Lunch at hotel. After lunch you will visit some of the oldest temples in the country. Dinner and overnight at lodge.
DAY 7 BUMTHANG-URA
In about 25 miles biking, you will reach the Ura La. On clear days you will have magnificent view of Mt. Gangkar Punsum (24,770 feet). Lunch will be served at the Ura La. You will have some time to admire remarkable paintings inside the temple. OPTION: You may choose to follow the old path to Ura village, which descends directly from the pass and takes you to the Ura temple. After Ura, you will continue for about an hour biking to the campsite. You will have a refreshing hot tea and snacks awaiting you. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 8 URA-MONGAR
After breakfast you will start your climb to Thrumshing La Pass (12,465 feet). It is the Kingdomís highest road pass and the traditional boundary between the Central and Eastern Bhutan. The ascent achieved in about 17 miles is quite gradual. Enjoy the views of the Greater Bhutanese Himalayas before your decent to break for lunch. Todayís descent is one of the most enjoyable and beautiful descents in the biking world ñ approximately 54miles in 5 hours. At the end of the descent, you will load your bikes into the support vans for the 17 miles climb to Mongar (5, 130 feet). Dinner and overnight at lodge.
DAY 9 MONGAR-TASHIGANG
You will finish your 11 gradual 25-mile climb to Kori La (7,840 feet) and you will have another great descent in store for you today. Lunch stop at Yadi village (4,800 feet). After a steep 5 mile climb will bring you to the end of the exhilarating day of biking. You will spend the night in a comfortable lodge in the heart of Tashigang town (3,520 feet).
DAY 10 TASHIGANG-KHALING
Tashigang is the easternmost point of your journey and this morning you will head south south towards Samdrup Jongkhar. You will begin the 16 miles climb to Bhutanís only University at Kanglung. You will visit the Zangdopelri temple in Kanglung before resuming your climb to Yonphula Pass. Lunch will be served at the pass. A few miles down the road, you will reach the quaint village of Khaling (6,720 feet). Khaling is famous for itís weaving and handicraft. Dinner and overnight at camp.

DAY 11 KHALING-MORONG
You will start todayís ride with a gradual climb to a small pass before your descent into Wamrong (6, 375 feet). Unlike Western Bhutan, the road here follows ridges for the mist of the way and is marked all along the way with Choetens (Buddhist Stupas). Today is the last opportunity to camp on this trip. The campsite offers a terrific view of the sun setting over the ridges of southeastern Bhutan.
DAY 12 MORONG-SAMDRUP JONGKHAR
After all the climbs you tackled ñ you will be no more uphill climbs today. The road descends to the plains through a dense tropical forest with teak and bamboo in abundance. Resume your ride to Samdrup Jongkhar. A few miles before the town lies the Bhutanese Frontier Check Point where you will have your exit seal stamped on your passport. After lunch you will gather for celebratory pictures before packing the bikes for the journey home. Evening at leisure. Farewell dinner and overnight at hotel.
DAY 13 SAMDRUP JONGKHAR-GUWAHATI
After breakfast you will drive to Guwahati Airport for your journey home.
